The Miethke SA ShuntAssistant and ShuntAssistant LP (Low Profile or PaediShuntAssistant) is an in-line position dependant gravitational valve used to prevent overdrainage in patients with shunted hydrocephalus. The ShuntAssistant accomplishes this by adjusting the opening pressure based on body position. In the upright position, the tantalum ball pushes down on a sapphire ball to increase the pressure required to push past the downward pressure of the balls weight. Because of this, it also prevents the siphoning effect possible in shunted patients. In the supine position, the balls do not exert pressure and the valve functions at the opening pressure of the proximal shunt valve.
