The Miethke Dual Switch Valve (DSV) from Aesculap uses two seperate valves in parallel to automatically adjust the flow of CSF in a patient depending on the position (either horizontal or vertical) to prevent overdrainage. It accomplishes this through the use of a tantalum ball that when in the supine position rolls away from the low pressure outlet allowing the valve to function as a traditional pressure-differential valve.
In the upright position (>60 degree), the tantalum ball blocks the low pressure outlet diverting flow to the higher pressure side of the valve.
